Remote Access to the CERN network information

Configurations

Windows 2000

Important Warning: Windows 2000 does not provide a built-in firewall. For security reasons, it is strongly recommended that you upgrade your computer to Windows XP if you plan to connect it to the internet using an internet service providers. CERN computers can be easily upgraded to Windows XP from the "Add remove program" applet in the control panel.

You should ensure that the modem is properly installed with the proper driver. To do so, open the "Phone and Modem Options" in the "control panel" and verify  that a  modem appears in the modem window.

Right click on "My Network Places" and select "Properties". This will open the "Network and Dial-up Connections" folder and double click "Make new connection". This will open the "Network Connection Wizard" where you should click on "Next" and then select "Dial-up to the internet".

This will start the "Internet connection Wizard" where you should select to setup your internet connection manually.

In the next step, enter the phone number that your ISP has given you:

When prompted for username/password, enter username and password that have been given you by your Internet Services provider.

You can finally name your connection with an arbitrary name. When prompted if you want to setup an "Internet mail account", answer "NO"

... and finish the wizard without connecting.

At this point you should have an icon with the name you  have chosen (My ISP in the picture below) in the "Network and Dial-up Connections" folder

Windows XP

Right click on "My Network Places" and select "Properties". This will open the "Network and Dial-up Connections" folder and double click "Make new connection". This will open the "Network Connection Wizard" where you should click on "Next" and then select "Connect to the internet".

This will start the "Internet connection Wizard" where you should select to setup your internet connection manually. In the next dialog, select 'Connect using a dial-up modem' and select the appropriate modem:

Then enter the name of the connection (e.g. My ISP), the telephone number provided by your ISP. In the dialog entitled "Connection Availability", you can choose whether to save this connection for the current logged on user or for all users on that computer. Then when prompted for username/password, enter  the credentials (username and password) the the ISP has given you to establish the connection. Uncheck the 'Make this the default Internet Connection' if you also use this computer on the CERN network and leave the Firewall active if you do not want to export services to the internet from your computer (strongly recommended).

... and finish the wizard be selecting 'Add a shortcut to this connection on my desktop' if you prefer. At this point you should have a "My ISP" Icon in the "Network and Dial-up Connections" folder and in the "Connect to" menu.

Windows 9x, Me, NT

CERN does not provide information on how to seup dial-in connection for these unsupported operating systems. If you need to setup a dial-in connection for these operating systems, please follow the instructions provided by your internet Service Provider.

Addendum: Installing the drivers for the CERN standard Nokia 6310i IrDa & Serial Cable Connection on Windows 2000-XP

The infrared port is located at the back on the laptop. The phone must be
positioned in a fixed position in front of the infrared port

Step 1: Install the infrared port driver (Windows 2000 pre-SP3 only)

This section only applies to Windows 2000 pre-ServicePack3 installation. NICE is currently deploying SP3 on all Windows 2000 computers, but you can anticipate this by installing SP3 manually from the 'Add New Programs' section in the 'Add/Remove Programs' applet in the Control Panel. The package is called 'Windows 2000 Cumulative Update (Windows 2000 Service Pack3,, Internet Explorer 6, etc.).

Step 2a: Infrared Connection: Verify the Infrared Port is working properly.

This only applies in case you want to use the infrared connection. The first thing to check is whether the Infrared port (IrDa) port has been recognized by Windows XP. This can be achieved by checking the Device Manager in the Computer Management. Then, the connection between the GSM phone and the computer must be checked. For this, activate the IrDa on your GSM (Menu -> Infrared), and point it to the infrared port of your computer. A information balloon will appear confirming proper detection has happened. The processes are illustrated in the following snapshots (click to enlarge).

Step 2b: Serial Cable connection:

This only applies in case you want to use the serial cable connection. You cannot use both serial and infrared connection simultaneously. Note that you will need to connect the cable to install the driver.

Step 3: Download all necessary drivers.

For convenience the latest version of the drivers has been made available on February 10th, 2003 and can be downloaded here.

Step 4: Install the necessary drivers

Run the downloaded 'Modem_Setup_for_Nokia_6310i.exe' program and follow the instructions on the screen. During the installation process, you will be prompted to select the 'Connection Method'. Check or uncheck the 'Install a modem for cable connection' and 'Install a modem for infrared connection' depending on the connection method(s) you want to use.

a/ Driver installation for serial cable modem:

Connect the serial cable to a free COM port on your laptop and click 'Next'. After a while,  dialog box will propose to use the detected COM port,. click 'Next' to accept.

Several dialog boxes will pop-up during the modem installation phase. Do NOT click any button until this process completed.

b/ Driver installation for infrared modem

Disconnect the serial cable and active the infrared port on your GSM (Menu -> Infrared). Click 'Next' to start the infrared link detection.

The following dialog will now appear, summarizing the installed connection methods:

Click 'Next' to start copying files.

At the end you will be prompted to restart the computer.

After reboot, open the 'Computer Management' from 'Control Panel' -> 'Administrative Tools'. Select now the 'Device Manager' and open the 'Modems' branch. Activate now the infrared transmitter on your phone which will display the modem entry in the list. If you see appearing a modem called 'Standard Modem over IR link', you must install the Nokia 6310i modem driver.

The Nokia 6310i modem driver can downloaded here. After downloading, right-click the Standard Modem over IR link' modem and select 'Update driver'. Note that the infrared link must remain active for this action.

Select the option 'Select from a list'

Click the 'Have Disk' button and browse to the folder containing the Nokia 6310i modem driver file (nokia6310iIrDA.inf). Select now 'Nokia 6310i' driver and install it (click 'Next').

After completing the installation, the Device manager should now display the new driver (Nokia 6310i).

Step 5: Configure the Dial-Up connection

You can now proceed as discussed at teh beginiing of this document to setup the dial-in connection with your ISP. Remember that your infrared connection must be active in order to be able to select the modem in the Dial-up networking modem list.

Mac OS (all versions)
